Here is an example of a Missed It! widget displaying missed calls, unread sms, and new g-mail along the top of this WidgetLocker lockscreen. Missed It! is one of the most reliable, stable apps for tagging updates on these default applications. I have also used it successfully to display updates from Google Voice, Nimbuzz, and other apps I use to communicate with family and friends. Here’s how I created this widget from beginning to end. Note 2/12: this was done when gmail still allowed third party apps to count gmails a few versions of the gmail app back. Mail counts for gmail may work if you use K9 mail in the alternative.
The Missed It! app currently runs for $0.99 on the Android Market. I’ve used this very reliable app to show concise data on missed calls, sms messages, and emails (Gmail). The same thing can be accomplished by pairing Tasker and Minimalistic Text – unless, of course, the output doesn’t create an error (I will demo my woes on that later).
But the Missed It! app also provides ease of customization to those who are not rooted, and therefore haven’t changed system fonts. There are plenty of options for changing the layout, static tests, text padding, and a whole lot more. Here are two examples of using this app on two different themed lockscreens:
